Nestled in the serene elegance of Jasna Polana in Princeton, NJ, Heling and Thomas celebrated a day that was as timeless as it was unique. Their love story began amidst the historic charm of Princeton University, where they first met through ballroom dance club. After doing long-distance for five years, the pandemic finally brought them to the same zip code, and on New Year’s Eve in 2022, Thomas proposed in the most romantic fashion: aboard the Belmond Andean Explorer in Peru. Princeton holds a special place in their hearts—it’s not only where their story started but also where we captured their dreamy engagement photos, making their wedding day even more meaningful.
A Symphony of Elegance and Artful Details
Every element of Heling and Thomas’s day was curated with thought and beauty. The florals incorporated vibrant oranges and jujube fruits, adding a unique touch that symbolized prosperity, health, and hope for an early son—a meaningful tradition in Chinese culture. Peanuts, symbolizing health and good fortune, further enriched the floral arrangements, adding layers of storytelling to the décor.
The day began with a heartfelt ceremony at the majestic Princeton University Chapel, a setting as grand and meaningful as their love story. One of their standout moments of the day was walking down the aisle together, a last-minute decision that added an extra layer of intimacy and connection to their ceremony. Heling made her first appearance in a breathtaking long-sleeved gown with a flowing train, complemented by traditional Chinese jewelry and intricate hairpins that paid homage to her heritage.
A Harmonious Blend of Traditions and Romance
From the moment you arrived at Jasna Polana, the estate’s stately neoclassical architecture and lush surroundings set the tone for a day filled with love and elegance. Designed by Barbara Piasecka Johnson, the wife of J. Seward Johnson, Jasna Polana draws inspiration from the grandeur of European estates, with its sweeping staircases, ornate columns, and meticulously crafted details that exude timeless sophistication. This stunning venue provided the perfect backdrop for Heling and Thomas’s celebration of love and culture.
Cultural traditions played a central role in their celebration. Their reception began with a nod to Thomas’s Polish roots as they performed the traditional bread, salt, and vodka ceremony. This playful custom brought a cheerful moment of lighthearted fun, with Heling being hilariously crowned the “dominant partner” after receiving the vodka shot.
Heling and Thomas later honored their families with a vibrant Chinese tea ceremony, a moment brimming with color and joy as they shared laughter and received blessings from loved ones. For this occasion, the couple changed into traditional Chinese outfits, adding another layer of cultural depth and significance to their wedding day.
Heling dazzled in a series of stunning outfit changes throughout the day. For their first dance, she wore a ballroom dancing dress adorned with long trailing ribbons that fluttered beautifully as they performed their choreographed routines. Their first dance to “Moon River” was deeply sentimental. More than a decade ago, they performed the same waltz during a Princeton Ballroom Dance Club showcase, making this truly the perfect “first dance” as a married couple. Later, she changed into a playful short reception dress, perfect for dancing the night away under Jasna Polana’s sparkling chandeliers.
Cherished Moments and Timeless Memories
From their emotional vows at the Princeton University Cathedral to their joyful celebration at Jasna Polana, Heling and Thomas’s day was filled with poignant and unforgettable moments. Guests enjoyed exquisite cuisine, laughed and danced, and celebrated the couple’s love amidst the opulent setting of Jasna Polana’s ballroom.
A Celebration Rooted in Love
Heling and Thomas’ wedding wasn’t just a union of two hearts but a beautiful blending of cultures and traditions. Set against the picturesque backdrop of Princeton’s iconic Cathedral and the timeless elegance of Jasna Polana, their day was a true reflection of who they are as a couple—joyful, graceful, and deeply in love.
This day was nothing short of magical. Thank you, Heling and Thomas, for inviting us to document your incredible story. Your wedding was a reminder of how love bridges traditions and creates moments that will last forever.
